Hours of Operation / Closed Days

Nakakaruizawa Library

Hours of Operation 9:30 - 19:00

Hanareyama Library

* Please note that no materials can be borrowed from Hanareyama Library. Only browsing is permitted at the library.

About Library Card

  • The library card can be used at both Nakakaruizawa Library and Hanareyama Library.
  • The library card is required for borrowing various types of materials as well as using the Internet and AV equipment, etc.
  • When making a library card, please bring identification with your name and address (such as driver's license, health insurance card and student ID) and register at the service counter.
  • When making a library card for your child, please bring his or her health insurance card.
  • Please contact us promptly if there is a change in your name, address or phone number, or if you have lost your library card.
    If you cannot find your library card, we can reissue one. (Reissue fee is 100 yen.)

When Borrowing Materials

* Please note that no materials can be borrowed from Hanareyama Library. Only browsing is permitted at the library.

  • If you are using the library for the first time, please make a library card.
  • Please bring your library card and the materials (books) you would like to borrow to the service counter.

When Returning Materials

  • Please bring the materials you are returning to the service counter.
  • Books borrowed from Nakakaruizawa Library can be returned to Hanareyama Library.
  • After the hours of operation or on days the library is closed, please return materials into the Book Post at the front entrance on the first floor.
  • Since audio-visual materials are fragile, please wrap them with cushioning materials, etc. before you return them into the book post.
  • In order to prevent problems, please return them during the hours of operation whenever possible.

How to Find Books

  • You can look for books you would like to read by using our computers for catalogue search. Please operate the computer by touching the screen.
  • The location of each book in the library is registered using computers. Please return books to their original location once you are finished with them.
    If you are unsure of where to return them, please ask the staff for help.

Audio-Visual Corner (Nakakaruizawa Library)

  • Audio-visual materials can be used at the booths in the library.
    If you would like to watch a DVD in the library, please bring your library card and an application card placed on the desk to the service counter on the second floor.

About Reserving / Requesting Materials

  • If the book you are looking for is out on loan, you can reserve it.
  • Please fill out the necessary information on a reservation card and submit it to the counter with your library card.
  • If the book you are looking for is not available at the library, we will try to answer your request as much as possible by borrowing it from another library or purchasing it.

Searching / Reserving Materials Online

  • By completing the pre-application, you can reserve materials that are currently out on loan online.
  • You can reserve materials through the Catalogue Search page, New Arrivals page, Most Borrowed page and Most Reserved page.
  • Please note that reservations made at the counter of the library take precedence.
  • The registration of reservations is performed once per day. Please note that the order of reservations may change in some cases.

About Pre-Application

By completing the pre-application, you can reserve materials online and check your status.

  • A library card and password are required for using the services.
  • We will issue you a temporary password at the counter of the library. Please apply for it at the counter when you visit the library.
  • We recommend that you change the password from the homepage or mobile site of Karuizawa Town Library.
    You can do so by clicking the "Change Password" button on the left side menu of the library homepage.
    On the mobile site, you can do so by clicking the "Change Password" button on the bottom menu.
    • *The new password must contain at least 6 half-sized letters or/and numbers.
    • *The library cannot check or change your password. Please make sure to manage it on your own. If you have forgotten your password, please re-register a password at the counter of the library.
  • If you register your e-mail address, you can receive notification related to reservations, etc. by e-mail.
    • *The library cannot check or change your e-mail address. Please make sure to manage it on your own.

Reference Service

  • We search through the materials at the library to help you with your survey, research, or smaller questions.
  • Please feel free to consult with us if you cannot find a material or do not know how to search for one, etc.
    (We also accept questions via postal mail, telephone and fax.)

Photocopying Service

  • Photocopying of library materials is allowed only if you are using them for personal use only.
    (However, it must be within the scope permitted by the copyright.)
  • Black-and-white copies are 10 yen per sheet, while color copies are 50 yen per sheet.
    (Hanareyama Library offers black-and-white copies only.)

Internet Usage (Nakakaruizawa Library)

  • We have computer terminals to allow library users to use the Internet.
  • If you would like to use the Internet, please fill out the necessary information on an application form and submit it to the counter with your library card.
  • Internet usage is limited to 1 hour per person.

About the Parking Lot (Nakakaruizawa Library)

The usage fees for the parking lot are as follows.

  • The parking lot is expected to be very crowded. If the parking lot is full, please use the town parking lot (east side of the library).
  • Please use public transportation to come to the library when possible.
